Mary was born in the London borough of Fulham. Self-taught and visually impaired, she loved to paint old buildings, shops and houses in her neighborhood. Working in oils, her intricate style captured the beauty of crumbling Victorian architecture and old brickwork before it fell victim to the wrecking ball.

"This painting was featured in the documentary The Royal Academy which my son Tony made. I like the items in the window. They were all Victorian and Edwardian china and bric-a-brac. For years, every time I'd walk past this shop I always had to stop and look in as the everything in the window changed frequently. But I never bought anything there as the items were all very expensive."
"This is my back yard. It looks just the same today as it did 40 years ago. Nothing has been modernized. This is how it looked in 1870 when the house was built and I'm glad it's the still the same. Only the sunflowers have gone. I like the shadow cast by the terraced house next door."
"The shop was on the Fulham Road opposite The George public house. The contrast of the crumbling exterior and beautiful flowers appealed to me. We used to order all our wreaths for funerals and bouquets for weddings from this shop. It was always an elderly woman who served us. She always seemed a little drunk but whether she was in fact Nellie Warner, I'm not sure. Her husband sat by the doorway all day."
"This was the last painting I did before suffering a stroke. It's where I used to buy all of my art equipment and supplies. This art shop has been selling artist's materials since 1870. But the building itself is much older than that. I love the details of all the items for sale in the window and thoroughly enjoyed painting them all exactly as they were at the time."
"My friend Charlotte commissioned this painting. It's a terraced house in Fulham. Her bicycle, seen here chained to the railings, was stolen shortly after the painting was completed, so she was pleased to have a record of it as well as her house."
"This structure could be seen from my garden. The smokehouse was at the back of Hitchcock's, a large fish shop on North End Road. It was used to smoke herrings which then became kippers or bloaters. Fortunately, I painted this picture before the smokehouse and the lovely trees were demolished. I loved that tree. I had seen it in all its seasons all through my life and was very sad to see it go."
